David A. Arnold, a stand-up comedian and showrunner known for his work in the stand-up genre and as the creator and showrunner of Nickelodeon's "That Girl Lay Lay," died unexpectedly on Wednesday. He was 54.
"It is with great sadness that we confirm the untimely death of our husband, father, brother and friend, David A. Arnold," Arnold's family said in a statement. “David died peacefully today at his home, and doctors ruled natural causes of death. Please pray for our family and respect our privacy now as we are all shocked and devastated by this loss."
Arnold's death came as a surprise to industry insiders. He collaborated with Kevin Hart, who produced Arnold's second Netflix stand-up series, It's Not for the Weak, which debuted in July. The special plot revolves around routine events centered on Arnold's family life, as well as marital quarrels and empowered children. This came after his 2019 Netflix stand-up debut with Fat Ballerina. In late April and early May, Arnold was featured as part of the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival.
Comedian Chris Spencer, a close friend of Arnold's, said the humor community "misses the loss of one of the best who ever did it". Spencer added that Arnold, a Cleveland native, was "cared for by his peers, respected by other veterans, and respected by the emerging comedians he mentored. I will miss him very much, especially his comedic fraternity."
